Ceramic Brake Pad?? What’s that??

Ceramic Brake Pad technology has been around for a few years, but many drivers are still not sure about what a ceramic pad is.
The terminology “ceramic” encompasses a wide class of materials. One definition is that ceramic materials are inorganic, non-metallic materials that are formed under high heat. Ceramics are widely used in the form of tiles, cups and dinnerware, bricks, armor and of course brake pads as well as plenty other applications.
Akebono comparison
The ceramic abrasives in the brake pads serve a two-fold purpose. They affect the friction created by the pad hence interfere with the brake performance. Secondly, they also help clean contaminants of the brake rotor surfacecreating a consistent braking surface.

A very important factor is the right formulation of ceramics in the pad as poor quality ceramics or the wrong mix can create noise, squealing brake dust, brake roughness and more rotor wear.  It is important to understand that the amount of ceramic built into the pad is not the determining factor but the right mix of compounds in the pad. Akebono pads are formulated with the right ceramic particles as well as other components to offer the driver the best braking characteristics including brake performance and low wear.

Ceramic particles can differ greatly in size, shape, and hardness. The types that do the best job in brakes are typically of a very small particle size (about 1/1000 the thickness of a dime!), a particularly narrow (minimal) variation in sizes, are of very specific hardness (relatively soft), and have specific characteristic shapes. Once you’ve bought the best material available, it’s time to combine it with optimized binders, friction modifiers, etc. to get the best overall outcome. To achieve every goal, a “true ceramic” brake pad formulation often has 20 or more different ingredients!

Many so-called “ceramic pads” only contain a small amount of ceramic material to justify the term “ceramic” on the label. The compounds are not formulated correctly and do not offer the superior characteristics of Akebono pads.
